Watch Now Documentary "Dr William Coley, The Father Of Cancer Immunotherapy"
It seems like everywhere you look, Immunotherapy for Cancer seems to be all over news. In fact in 2018 James P. Allison and Tasuku Honjo were jointly awarded the Nobel Prize for discovering a class Immunotherapy drugs for cancer.
But, did you know that Immunotherapy for the treatment of cancer was actually discovered over 100 years ago?
In 1891, bone surgeon William Coley, developed a naturally derived bacterial-based therapy. Coley noticed that some of his cancer patients went into spontaneous remission after developing erysipelas (bacterial infection).
Seeking to recreate the “immune” response created by the infection, Coley began injecting patients with live and dead versions of the Streptococcus bacteria. He actually achieved responses such as durable complete remission in several types of cancer. He later named his treatment, “Coley’s Fluid.”
But What Happened?
You may be asking yourself that if Coley's method was so successful then what happened to it?
We seek to answer that question and more in the documentary above.
